The Disabled Veterans’ Scholarships Fund: The Open University
The Disabled Veterans’ Scholarships Fund provides free education to all disabled veterans who have been injured in or due to service, along with a wraparound disability support and careers advisory service. The fund is open to anyone; from the most inexperienced of learners who are seeking to study an access module, through to seasoned students who are hoping to complete undergraduate degrees.
The Open University’s ambition is to harness the potential of the UK’s veterans by supporting the educational development of those who are discharged due to disabilities. Unlike members of the public who make plans for retirement, their unexpected discharge from service life may mean that disabled Veterans are less prepared for a new life outside of the military, and therefore will benefit greatly from the opportunity to get back into education.
- 50 scholarships are available in 2021/2022.
- All undergraduate and postgraduate modules and qualifications are eligible for the scheme. To be eligible the applicant should commence study for the first time in the applicable academic year.
- Full fee waivers will be available for a full undergraduate or postgraduate qualification, up to a maximum of 120 credits per seasonal academic year, 360 credits in total and not exceeding £18,000.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible to apply for the scheme you must meet all the following criteria:
- Be starting OU study in the applicable academic year.
- Be eligible for a UK fee.
- Be disabled as a result of, or in, military service.
You'll find all of the eligibility criteria in the terms and conditions here.
Supporting evidence
You will need to provide evidence which confirms that your disability arose during, or as a result of, military service. This could be a letter from your current GP or Consultant, or your confirmation of medical discharge.
Applications for the 2021/2022 Acedemic year are now open, and will close midnight 9 July 2021
