  • Blesma Members embark on Walking With The Wounded challenge

    Walking With The Wounded

    Four Blesma Members have set off today on a challenge to reach the South Pole in the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge.   Kate Philp, Guy Disney, Ibrar Ali and Duncan Slater are part of Team Glenfiddich and will be taking on Team US and Team Commonwealth in a race to the South Pole.    The race will cover 335km in 16 days with temperatures as low as -35°c and constant winds. Members of all teams have sustained injuries while serving their countries, making this no ordinary South Pole expedition!    Everyone here at Blesma wishes T

  • Thackray Medical Museum

    We have a great opportunity for Blesma Members to have a say in a new exhibition at the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds that is due to open in August 2014 to coincide with the centenary of the First World War. The exhibition will focus on the medical responses to, and advances from, injuries sustained in military service - mainly hearing loss, PTSD and limb loss. The museum would like to make contact with veterans who have lost a limb through military service to help them with both the co

  • Remembrance Sunday

    29 injured military veterans will march past the Cenotaph in the Remembrance Sunday Parade this weekend as part of the Blesma contingent The contingent this year will consist of a total of 29 Members - 23 on scooters or electric wheelchairs and 6 ‘walking wounded’. The ex-service men and women will be led by the Parade Commander Lt Col (Retd) Jerome Church; also Blesma Chief Executive and Member who lost his leg in Northern Ireland. Partners and carers of the Members will march behind them.

  • Blesma Support Officers Training

    A recent prosthetics awareness-raising session for Blesma Support Officers (BSO) at the Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre in Preston on 16 – 17 October was a runaway success. It was suggested by the Trustees to bring our regional Support Officers up to a collective level of knowledge within prosthetics. Over the course of the first afternoon, Blesma staff were briefed by clinicians and then given a demonstration of the different casting techniques used in socket manufacture by a qualified prosthetist at the Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre in Preston.
