Outline of project

We are recruiting adult above-knee prosthesis users with acquired limb loss for a two-part study measuring within-day and between-day changes in residual limb size (participants would be welcome to take part in either or both parts of the study, as they wish). Female amputees are typically not well-represented in research studies, so we are hoping to recruit both male and female (pre- and post- menopause) participants.

The aims of this project are:
a) to better understand the range of both short- and medium-term size changes in residual limbs, and
b) include female participants, publish sex-disaggregated results, assess what the impact of menstrual cycle is on day-to-day residual limb size and socket comfort.

One part of the study involves completing a comfort diary twice a day for ~28 days, which includes questions regarding prosthesis use and level of comfort, as well as taking measurements of the residual limb (circumferences/length), done by the participant. (For females who have a menstrual cycle, this would also involve tracking the cycle day/phase).

The second part would involve travelling to Imperial College White City Campus in London for a session lasting 2-3 hours, during which participants would be asked to complete a few walking activities, followed by removing the socket and having the residual limb imaged using depth cameras (non-invasive and non-contact).
