Grandson rides 500 miles in memory of Grandfather

A Chelmsford man is taking on the challenge of cycling 500 miles in memory of his grandparents.

Nathan Chapman, 27, has chosen to undertake five events, riding 100 miles for each event, for Blesma, the Limbless Veterans, Cancer Research UK and Alzheimer’s Society. All three charities were close to Nathan and his grandparents’ hearts.

“I chose to fundraise for Blesma because my grandfather was the Vice President for many years,” said Nathan. “He carried on supporting the charity until he died really so I know all about the great work Blesma do.”

Nathan’s grandfather, Charles Dunham MBE was Vice President for Blesma from 1980 until 1999, previously working as the General Secretary for 22 years. Charles was serving in the Royal Corps of Signals when he was shot and seriously wounded in both legs whilst deployed in North Africa. His injuries led to a leg amputation.

Nathan's grandfather, Charles, was also a keen cyclist

“As I really enjoying cycling I thought it would be cheating just to do one event so had to make it more difficult. The night rides are the toughest as you are riding through the dark and tiredness.”

Nathan has just two of five challenges to complete, having already finished the Suffolk 100 on 19th June, Dunwich Dynamo on 16th July and Prudential Ride London to Surrey on 31st July. Hertfordshire 100 is Nathan’s next challenge on 28th August and will be finishing his 500 miles on 11th September with the Essex 100.
