Family fun-day event to raise money for injured veterans

2 June 2015

Veteran and amputee David Wild, 48, has organised a family fun-day to be held at The Anchor pub on Blackburn Road in Darwen to raise money for military charity Blesma, The Limbless Veterans.

The event is being held on Saturday 6 June and starts at 2pm. Entry is free and everyone is welcome. There will be a BBQ, a mobile shooting range, a bouncy castle, raffle tickets on sale and a Punch & Judy show with music running throughout the afternoon and into the early evening.

Local brewery Thwaites have donated an 86-pint barrel and proceeds of the sales will come to Blesma.

David, a former Corporal in the Royal Army Medical Corps and veteran of the 1991 Gulf War, chose to fundraise for Blesma after losing his left leg below the knee following a routine operation that went wrong 13 months ago.

David, a resident of Darwen, says: “After a life-changing incident, Blesma helped me to pick up the pieces and get on with my life. They helped me work out what welfare allowances I am entitled to, my Army pension and adaptations to my house now that I am a wheelchair user. They are also always there when I need someone to talk to. I am looking to give back to a charity that has done so much for me.”

David now spends his time organising events such as this one, and volunteering with the Darwen Branch of the Royal British Legion in their welfare department.

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
