The annual Big Give Christmas Challenge is back for another year, and we've already smashed our fundraising target of £30,800 – thanks to supporters like YOU!

If you missed out on making a donation – don't worry. Our Big Give campaign is still running until midday 5th December. Every donation, no matter how big or small, makes a difference.

Matched Donations Will Support Blesma’s Members

This year, matched donations will go towards Blesma’s Storytelling and Wellbeing programme. The project will feature online and in-person workshops with professional storytellers, which are designed to help Blesma Members and their families build confidence and promote good mental wellbeing.

The new programme will be open to all Members including Widows and Widowers, and Members who served in the UK Forces from other nationalities. Reaching our Big Give matched funding target of £30,800 will allow Blesma to support an additional 150 Blesma Members through the Storytelling and Wellbeing programme.

“The workshops will provide Members with opportunities to connect with other Members to share experiences, learn from one another and be creative. The programme will also offer an opportunity to meet other local Blesma Members and make connections within local Blesma communities.” – Alice Knight-Driver, founder of the arts and training organisation that developed Making Generation R with Blesma.

For Blesma Members such as Alison and Pete – Member activities, in-person meet ups and workshops such as Blesma’s Storytelling and Wellbeing programme can provide long lasting, positive and life-enhancing experiences.

Alison’s Story

Former Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps nurse Alison Grant had just come back from a tour of Iraq during the Gulf War and was driving to her parents in Switzerland, when she was hit by a drunk driver – which broke her neck. As a result, she now uses a wheelchair, and with the help of Blesma, she attends activities, and continues to feel part of the military family.

"At Blesma events, people talk to you and give you empathy, you talk to each other and share things. It is all about making those vital social connections. I now know lots of Blesma Members and what they’ve been through. I’ve got their contact details in case I need to call them"

Pete’s Story

Retired Royal Logistic Corps Major Pete Norton was severely injured by an IED in Iraq in 2005 while he was working in a coalition anti-terror and bomb disposal unit. He lost his left leg and left arm in the blast, while his right leg has recently been amputated above the knee.

Pete was awarded the George Cross for his bravery following the blast, and because his actions also saved the lives of American troops he was awarded the FBI Star, the Bureau’s equivalent of the Purple Heart. With the help of Blesma, Pete also has access to projects such as the Storytelling and Wellbeing programme, social activities, compensation advice and prosthetic support.

"[With fellow Blesma Members] there’s a real bond – they’re all great at helping and teaching each other, both with the specific activities and life in general; telling each other about tricks and tips for prosthetics, or where to go to get help. It’s a really strong community." – Pete Norton, Blesma Member
