Lexi Chambers is set to mark Blesma's 90th anniversary with a series of challenges.
The former Royal Signals Soldier, marathon runner, and award-winning fitness instructor have seven events planned from May to October.
The first of Lexi’s challenges is scheduled for 15 May with the Exmouth triathlon, where she will swim, cycle using her hand bike and use her everyday wheelchair.
A week later Lexi will complete her first half marathon at the Great West Run on 22 May, followed by the Rehab Triathlon in Plymouth on 23 June, the Cardiff Summer Half Marathon on 3 July, the Bridgewater Half Marathon on September 4, the Goodwood Motor Circuit Marathon on 25 September and accumulating with the London Marathon on October 2.
The 44-year-old, who elected to amputate her left leg below the knee after suffering from excruciating pain caused by hammer toes which led to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), said: “When I first lost my leg, I was pretty much housebound in a first-floor apartment. It was difficult to do anything then Blesma helped me regain my independence and mobility by providing me with a lightweight wheelchair.
“I had dreams of running a marathon and triathlon before my amputation, and I was determined those dreams would not be gone forever. So, I learned to adapt the way I trained and realised that becoming a wheelchair user didn’t mean the end of sport and fitness. Blesma has been there supporting the whole way through.”
With her newfound confidence in sports, Lexi has set her goals high.
“I’ve spoken to Guinness World Records to see if anyone had set a record for doing a marathon in a non-sport wheelchair. A gentleman has but while one woman has completed the London Marathon in a non-sport wheelchair, no record was set.
I’m hoping to raise the profile of the charity more if I could set two world records for being the fastest female to complete a half marathon and a full marathon using a non-sport wheelchair.”
