Activity report: Blesma Christmas Markets Couples' Weekend

Blesma Members enjoyed the festivities in December spending some quality festive time with their partners/ spouses, thanks to a trip to Belgium organised by Blesma.

Four couples attended the Belgium Christmas Markets Couples’ Weekend, where they enjoyed visiting the historic cities of Brussels and Bruges and their world-famous Christmas markets.

On day one, Members were treated to a chocolate making experience and had the opportunity to explore the famous Christmas Markets before dining together later that evening. On day two, couples independently explored the city, with opportunities to take a river boat tour and horse and cart ride around Bruges with the rest of the group.

The trip was several firsts for Frank Yates, who only joined the Association last year, as not only was it his first Blesma activity but also his first time in Belgium.

Frank said: “Being the first activity I had ever attended, both myself and my partner, Heather, didn’t know what to expect but it was everything you would get in the military; it was a really well thought out trip and executed fantastically. The whole weekend was incredible, but if I had to name a highlight, it was the meal Heather and myself went for on our own. It was the first time in a long time that we were able to go out and enjoy a meal as a couple. It was a beautiful setting in a beautiful location.”

In December, Blesma Members and their partners also become chocolate makers as they whipped up some praline chocolate treats!

As well as getting a short relaxing break, the activity also provides time for Members to build a similar comradeship they had whilst serving and gives partners/ spouses the chance to create friendships with others in similar situations. Something Frank and his partner greatly benefited from.

Heather said: “It was a very special activity for us both. Being around other Blesma Members gave us reassurance that everything we have experienced since Frank had his amputation is totally normal. My favourite moment was when we got on the ice-skating rink for the first time as we weren’t sure Frank would be able to skate. I don’t think I have smiled that much in a long time.”

The couple enjoyed the activity so much, they plan to return to Belgium again in December 2019 with the rest of their family.
