Thinking of organising a charity golf day, but don’t know where to begin? It’s no secret that golf competitions can be a great way to raise funds for a charity and drive member engagement.
At Blesma, we’ve run our annual charity golf day for a number of years, which helps us fundraise for injured and limbless veterans. Here are our top tips on how to organise a successful charity golf day.
Different Charity Golf Day Ideas To Mix Things Up
Hosting a one-day golf competition is often the go-to option, but how about mixing it up by hosting a charity golf tournament over a weekend?
Here are a few ideas to make your day or weekend stand out:
- Longest drive - Players can take turns throughout the day either on the driving range or on a Par 4 or 5 hole.
- Nearest the pin - This type of contest is held on a Par 3 hole. Players should take turns to hit three shots towards the pin. The player with the lowest score wins.
- Team scramble - This is usually made up of teams of four. Everyone tees off on each hole and the team selects the best shot. Every player will hit their next shot from that spot – this continues until the ball is holed. The aim is for the lowest round score.
- Beat the pro - The club’s pro or one of the assistant pros will play first and amateur golfers taking part in the tournament will attempt to beat their score.
- Longest putt - The aim of the longest putt is to sink the longest putt from the furthest distance.
- Golf club tournament - Choose to host either an individual, team or mixed 18-hole golf tournament.
- Best dressed team - Shake things up by running a fancy dress competition at the golf club.
Prizes
After you’ve decided what type of competitions to run, the next step is deciding what prizes to offer. Depending on your budget and what your golf club are willing to offer as prizes, here are a few ideas:
- Customised trophies or plaques
- Gift cards at the pro shop
- A golf lesson with the club’s pro
- A food hamper
- A bottle of wine or whiskey
How To Fundraise
Alongside hosting your charity golf day competition or various events, you’ll want to decide on at least one way of fundraising for your chosen charity.
These are some of the popular ways to fundraise for a charity golf day:
- Host a charity auction
- Host a raffle
- Charge per competition entry, with proceeds going to your selected charity
- Get local businesses to sponsor your event with proceeds going to your chosen charity
- Host a BBQ or post-golf dinner with tickets

Advertising Your Charity Golf Day
One of the most important aspects of hosting a charity golf day is driving sign ups from golf club members and whether you’d like to invite non-members outside of the club to join. Hosting a charity golf day can also be a good way to encourage new membership sign ups.
Start off by deciding how many people and/or teams you’d like to sign up. Once you have a goal in mind, this will make it easier to work towards, as well as keeping an eye on numbers and milestones you want to achieve by certain dates.
Ideally you should start promoting your charity golf day at least 3 months in advance. Start off by advertising to members inside the club through posters, your website, an email newsletter, social media and word of mouth.
If you’d like to attract non-members too, encourage your members to share any social posts advertising the charity golf day from your golf club’s social channels. You might also want to run a small-scale paid social media campaign on platforms such as Facebook.
Fundraise for Blesma
Interested in hosting a charity golf day, but not sure what charity to support?
Since 1932, Blesma has been the only national Armed Forces charity dedicated to supporting limbless veterans for life, offering financial and emotional support to veterans and their families.
Many of Blesma’s Members play golf themselves – often taking part in adaptive golf, which can be adapted to almost any type of disability through modified golfing equipment and rules.
If you’re interested in joining our annual golf day, our next event will be taking place at Studley Wood Golf Club on 18th July 2025.
On the other hand, if you’d like to host your own charity golf day and are potentially interested in fundraising for Blesma. Please don’t hesitate to contact our fundraising team directly at fundraising@blesma.org.
