Limbless veteran Stuart Pearson,44, is to walk the London Marathon to raise money for Blesma, The Limbless Veterans.

In September 2006 whilst Stu, who now lives in Colchester, was serving in the parachute regiment in Kajaki, Helmand province, Afghanistan, he stood on an antipersonnel mine. As a result, he lost his left leg above the knee, but numerous injuries to his right leg have caused problems with his ankle which restricts what he can and can’t do. The reason why he will be walking the marathon instead of running.

“The trips I have attended with Blesma have changed my life in a way and made life good for me. It’s the fact that they understand that I’m not useless because I’ve lost a leg,” says Stu.

As part of his training, Stu has been using a cross training every day for an hour and is prepared for any problems such as ulcers and stump pains that the challenge may bring. Stu originally aimed to raise £2500 for Blesma but after beating his target, has decided on a new target of £3500.

“I like to have a challenge, something to aim for. It’s good to get my fitness up too. I’m looking forward to the London Marathon.”

This is not Stu’s first charity fundraising as he has taken part in walking and cycling fundraisers before.

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
