Mother and daughter to take part in ‘Fall for the Fallen’ to raise funds for Blesma

13 August 2015

Susan Tyrrell, 57, from Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire will be taking on a tandem skydive to raise money for injured service personnel along with her daughter Liz Ogden from Bolton, a special needs teaching assistant.

The event, Fall for the Fallen, will see one jump for every soldier killed while on operations in Afghanistan. It will take place at Netheravon Airfield in Wiltshire over the August Bank Holiday weekend with the money that they raise going to Blesma, The Limbless Veterans.

Jumpers will also be given the chance to meet Blesma’s own sky-diving team, the Trans4mers.

Blesma is a cause particularly close to Susan’s heart – her husband Mark is a Member after losing the use of his limbs due to Multiple Sclerosis. Mark served as a Major with the Queen Alexandra Royal Nursing Corps before being medically discharged in 2011. He is now a resident at Stanley House Nursing Home in Herefordshire.

While daughter Liz has not jumped before, Susan has jumped with husband Mark. While Mark enjoyed the experience, Susan said she would not do it again, she says: “Mark and I did a skydive in 2010 and he felt when he did it that he didn't have MS. He is now unable to do another so despite me feeling motion sickness last time I have decided to do it again, for him.”

Laura Hyde, Events Manager at Blesma says: “Fall for the Fallen is a fantastic event that not only will raise vital funds for our limbless veterans but will honour all those who have unfortunately lost their lives while serving our country in Afghanistan. To all those people taking on this challenge for Blesma, I wish them the best of luck!”

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
