Family Fun Day raises over £750 for charity supporting limbless veterans

11 June 2015

A family fun day held at The Anchor Hotel on Blackburn Road in Darwen has raised more than £750 for military charity, Blesma, The Limbless Veterans as part of the charity's annual 'Blesma Week' fundraising and awareness initiative.

The event - on Saturday 6th of June - was organised by veteran and amputee, David Wild from Darwen, as part of the charities annual fundraising and awareness raising event, Blesma Week.

More than 350 people attended the family fun day including Councillor Trevor Maxfield, the Mayor of Darwen and Bob Wood, Chairman of the Darwen Branch of the Royal British Legion. Guests enjoyed a barbeque and were entertained with various activities such as a mobile shooting range, a bouncy castle and music throughout the day.

Mr Wild who is a former Corporal in the Royal Army Medical Corps said: “I wanted to give back to Blesma, especially since they have given so much to me. It was an excellent day, a big thank you to all that attended. I would also like to pass on a special thanks to Lance and Mel, the Landlord and Landlady of The Anchor Hotel for allowing us to use their pub for the day.”

David has been fundraising for Blesma for the last year after losing his left leg below the knee in an operation that went wrong.

The money raised from his event will go towards Blesma’s vital work supporting injured veterans to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
