Youth Group raise money for limbless veterans as part of National Citizen Service

10 December 2014

A group of young people aged 16 and 17 have raised nearly £1,000 for Blesma, The Limbless Veterans over four weeks.

The group of 14 carried out a number of fundraising activities including cake sales, school assemblies and packing bags at a supermarket as part of the National Citizen Service scheme in East Sussex.

Their efforts culminated in a fundraising evening on Friday 28 November with local performers, a raffle and a presentation on Blesma from representatives of the charity. The following Friday saw a cheque presented to local Blesma volunteer Sheila Oakley from local MP Stephen Lloyd for £936.42.

NCS Programme Co-ordinator Kay Rufai said: “The group researched thoroughly the work that Blesma does and found it to be very inspirational, many of the young people were surprised that they had not heard of the charity before considering the fantastic work that it does, so decided that it was equally as important to raise awareness as it was to raise funds.”

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
