GE Aviation Engineer runs his first marathon for the “perfect charity”

17 March 2014

Rob Workman, 31, is looking forward to his toughest challenge yet for a charity after his own heart. He will be joining other Blesma runners when they take on the Virgin London Marathon next month.

Rob, from Cheltenham, is a Test Equipment Engineer with GE Aviation based in Bishop’s Cleeve, Gloucestershire. Blesma have been working in partnership with GE Aviation for the past 12 months. Rob was part of a team of 21 that completed the 3 Peaks Challenge and then 12 other peaks across the UK for Blesma last year, raising a total of £5202.74. However, this will be his first marathon.

Rob first heard about Blesma through the partnership between the charity and GE Aviation. He has been fundraising through work contacts and his running total is currently around £1,300.

Rob says: “I am not expecting this to be easy, but can’t think of a better charity to push myself for. I had not heard of them until recently but as I get to know them, I don’t think I could have chosen a more worthy cause. I just hope my knees will hold out!”

Jessica Vincent, Corporate Fundraising Executive at Blesma says: “Rob is another excellent example of the fantastic support GE Aviation are showing our Members. The hard work and determination with training and fundraising shown by marathon runners such as Rob allows us as a charity to continue providing vital support to injured service personnel. I am looking forward to meeting Rob at the finish line!"

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
