Former soldier raising funds for injured comrades through six challenges in six months

13 May 2014

Former Lance Corporal Rob Tuck, 26, will be taking on a variety of challenges in an attempt to raise £1,000 for Blesma, The Limbless Veterans.

Rob, who is from Leicester, is currently training in accounting and finance at De Montfort University and is just finishing his first year.

While in the Army, Rob served with the Intelligence Corps all over the UK and abroad including Salisbury, Northern Ireland and Jordan with an operational tour in Afghanistan. Although Rob had known of Blesma through the Army, it was through a friend who lost his brother in Afghanistan that Rob found out more about how the charity helps wounded service personnel and veterans.

As a keen runner and cyclist, Rob had always wanted to do a triathlon and a marathon – but after booking them quite close together, Rob ended up signing up to four more events, making it six events in six months.

The set of challenges will start with the Anglian Water Duathlon on the 18 May and finishing up with the Leicester Marathon on the 26 October. Other events Rob is taking part in include a 124 mile bike ride in June, the Silverstone duathlon in July, the BRAT triathlon in August and the Robin Hood half marathon in September.

Rob says: “After serving in Afghanistan and knowing people who have been directly affected by the conflict, I wanted to raise money for a cause that helped out people like them. As a smaller charity, I know the money I raise for Blesma will have a bigger impact in supporting injured service personnel and their families.”

As part of his fundraising efforts, Rob has been collecting at Forest Park in Leicester, the restaurant where he works part-time as a chef. So far they have raised around £100. Rob’s running total is just over £500.

Annette Hall, Head of Fundraising at Blesma says: “We are delighted to have been chosen by Rob as the beneficiary charity for his set of challenges. Rob knows exactly the kind of impact that conflict can have on our servicemen and women and hopefully this will spur him on. Everyone here at Blesma wishes Rob the very best of luck!”

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependants. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932.
