Kirk Hughes will represent Scotland in an amputee football tournament in summer

Kirk Hughes’ amputee football glory trail is continuing with a call-up to the Scotland squad for an international summer tournament. The former Royal Navy stoker has racked up multiple English Amputee Football Association (EAFA) league titles and trophies along with a coveted FA Disability Cup triumph in the four years since he first tried the sport with the Pompey in the Community scheme.

The 45 year old, who plays for Portsmouth Amputee FC, had a left leg above-knee amputation after contracting meningitis and then Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. He is now encouraging
other Members and amputee veterans to take to the pitch and try amputee football.

“It’s a great sport and very welcoming, so it is easy to start playing – you don’t have to be at elite level,” said Kirk, who also carried the flag for the UK at the 2017 Invictus Games, where he won two bronze medals. “Indoor sport took a massive hit during Covid, so I gave amputee football a go and loved it from the very start.

“It is a great honour to be representing Scotland, and it is certainly not something that I ever imagined would be possible after becoming injured. It would be great for other Blesma Members to try amputee football, whether they just want to enjoy team sports and be a bit more active or if they have their sights set on taking it to a higher level.”
