Rock bottom to top of the world - Blesma Member Hari Budha Magar's Story

In 2010, Hari lost both his legs while serving in Afghanistan with The Royal Gurkha Rifles.

In the years following his injury, Hari took up ice and rock climbing and soon he began to follow his childhood dream of climbing Mount Everest. He was originally denied permission by the Nepalese tourism office to climb the world’s tallest peak because he doesn’t have legs.

“I worked so hard in 2017 to get ready for the climb up Everest and I was actually training on a mountain when I found out. You can’t tell someone they can’t do something just because they don’t have legs. It’s about someone’s rights! I decided this was a bureaucratic mountain that I would have to climb before I could climb Mount Everest! We overturned the rules in March 2018. I am now doing lots of training.”

He is the first ever double above-knee amputee to summit a mountain over 6,000m. Hari never intended to break the record, he climbed to challenge himself and to inspire others.
