Blesma-sponsored snowboarder Owen Pick has become Dew Tour Adaptive Banked Slalom Champion.
The win marks Owen’s first gold medal in any major contest at Dew Tour on 8th February. Dew Tour is an innovative contest series and content platform that brings together the world’s best skateboarders, snowboarders, skiers, artists, brands, and fans in a celebration of creativity and style.
The 28-year-old said: “Winning gold was pretty rad, especially at Dew Tour. Its an invite only competition, and there are no categories. They only invite the top adaptive snowboarders in the world regardless of their disability.”
Despite heavy snowfall overnight, Owen tamed the course to finish with a time of 1:06.02, putting him 1.56 seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher Matti Suur-Hamari (Finland) in the men’s class.
“The weather conditions were terrible. We had a metre of snow overnight that buried the course. Officials had to almost rebuild the course in a space of a few hours. It makes the snow go mega soft, so it becomes a super technical race. I tried to take the course as gently as possible. Loads of pressure would mean you’d sink and stop dead.”
Owen was just 18 years old when he was injured while serving in Afghanistan with the Royal Anglian regiment. He battled for 18 months to keep his leg before having his leg amputated in August 2011. He took part in a Blesma activity where he learnt to snowboard for the first time.
