The White Report came about because a small number of limbless Veterans, including retired Royal Marines, are going overseas for treatment. Blesma, the lead Service charity upon living with limb loss since the aftermath of WW1, and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund wished to know why, so we asked one of them, Jon White, to answer the question in a report and to suggest a plan for the future.
We believe the White Report merits serious consideration and discussion. Much progress has been made as a result of the Murrison initiative, and we look forward to working with the NHS to keep building capability, in a realistic and practical way, for the nation’s benefit, not just for Veterans.
The White Report is focused upon a smaller cohort of highly complex cases and it is only right we ask why they seek alternative treatment and how UK can do better. We would not wish to reverse the progress to date, for which we are enormously grateful to the NHS, and with whom we have a most constructive working relationship. However, for the most complex of injuries we believe the NHS needs the active support of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Blesma is keen to encourage such active support, and is in an ongoing dialogue to bring about additional flexibility.
