Their Story
Blesma Support Officer London and South East: Steve Burrell
Steve Burrell brings to Blesma a wide range of very relevant experience, having worked for Blind Veterans UK as a Community Support worker for Hertfordshire for 3 years. This role involved working with veterans who had either lost their sight in service, or years after due to various eye conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Before that he served in the Army for 22 years, and in the last 12 years of his service worked in the Army Welfare Service providing support to soldiers and their families, including everything from low level counselling to working on child protection cases.
Steve's experience at Blind Veterans UK led him to Blesma, where he hopes to use his skills to assist the width and breadth of our Membership. He is a keen amateur cook and loves to dabble in new recipes, and also hosts his own local pub quiz.

Jess Linge
I have been the Outreach Officer for the London & South East since March 2020. I grew up with Blesma in my life. My Dad has been a member of Blesma for over 25 years. I have seen the difference and impact Blesma has made to my family’s life, so I am grateful to now be a part of the Blesma team and to have the opportunity to assist and support other Blesma members, this is something very important and close to my heart. Blesma creates some fantastic opportunities for our members, from learning new skills, taking up new hobbies, to socialising and engaging with others on activities.
I do not have one particular focus to my role, as I believe there to be many important aspects. However, I am passionate in encouraging members to connect and engage in the activities and events Blesma has to offer. Which in turn can help to reduce isolation, increase confidence, and make new friendships. I look forward to seeing members get involved in Outreach events, where there are opportunities to try something new, learn new skills and meet other members.
In my spare time I enjoy playing golf. I try to play and practice as much as I can, but I have to say as the years go on, I am very much a fair-weather golfer now! I first started playing when I was 3. My dad is a very good golfer and being a single arm amputee, he swings the club with one arm, when I was little this is how I use to swing the club too after watching him play.
