Life After Traumatic Injury Can Be Challenging

Nobody ever forgets the day they lose a limb. In 2004, while serving in Iraq, Neil was critically injured in a bomb blast that claimed both of his legs above the knee.

Lying on the ground, I could see the extent of my injuries, and I was sure I didn’t have any chance of surviving.

Neil fell into a coma. When he eventually woke, he was faced with the devastating reality that both of his legs had been amputated. At the very same time, he was also given life-changing news: he was going to become a dad.

Following the attack, Neil underwent extensive treatment for severe burns and began the long journey of recovery, learning to adapt to life without both legs while preparing for fatherhood.

With the ongoing support of Blesma, Neil has rebuilt his life. Despite becoming one of the first above knee amputees to summit the Matterhorn, one of his proudest achievements is living independently and building a happy and fulfilling life.

Please donate to our Armed Forces Appeal so that injured and limbless veterans like Neil can continue to lead meaningful lives. Your donation can help Blesma provide vital mobility assistance, welfare grants and companionship for the duration of their lives.
