6th June 2013, aged 44
Jerome Church, General Secretary of Blesma, The Limbless Veterans says: “Lieutenant Colonel Mike McErlain, a surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps has been one of our most dedicated supporters for many years. Seven years ago, he, his brother-in-law Giles Barnes and his wife Jo set up Dday44run – a 47 mile endurance run for us. This run takes place along the historic Normandy beaches to honour all those who sacrificed so much there, and in so doing, to support Blesma, The Limbless Veterans as they continue to empower amputee veterans injured on those beaches and in every theatre of conflict since.
Mike was running the beaches again for Blesma on Thursday 6 June this year when he very sadly collapsed and died. We are all shocked and deeply saddened. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.
Mike has raised many thousands of invaluable pounds for us and we promise to spend that money wisely and well in his memory. We will not forget.”
