Vinod Budhathoki lost both of his legs in a bomb blast whilst serving in Afghanistan. 15 years later, he still clearly remembers that day.
It was my second tour of Afghanistan. I was clearing a path for my patrol and we had to cross a canal. Just before I stepped in the water there was a huge bang. There was dust everywhere and then my legs felt as if they were burning. I was thinking about my wife because she was pregnant with our first child, and I worried how she would be if I died.”

Spring Appeal 2025
More about Vinod's story
Vinod’s fellow soldiers tried to stop the bleeding and gave him morphine. He was taken to hospital and was operated on immediately.
After regaining consciousness, initially, he didn’t realise how high up the amputations were on his legs.

I touched my legs under the blanket and realised they were above the knee. I just cried. But I never showed anyone that; I didn’t want to show any weakness.
Following the loss of Vinod’s limbs, and to this day, Blesma has supported him in his recovery and provided financial advice after his military career-ending injuries. 15 years after losing his legs, Vinod still keeps in contact with other Blesma Members, sharing camaraderie and a unique bond.
Your donation to our Spring Appeal will help Vinod and other injured veterans lead independent and fulfilling lives.
