Supporting veterans like Roger

Roger
“It feels my life just gets better every minute!”

Roger Dorey, who served in the Royal Navy for eight years, became a bilateral above-knee amputee in 2019. Using a regular wheelchair was nearly impossible for him due to rough terrain and the physical strain it placed on his body. For years, he had to rely on family and friends to leave his home and complete even basic tasks like food shopping.

But thanks to Blesma, Roger received an electric wheelchair that allowed him to complete his first solo outing in two years.

“I was told I wasn’t eligible for an electric wheelchair, but within a couple of weeks of joining the Association, my Support Officer got me one. It feels as though my life just gets better every minute!”

How your donations make a difference for veterans like Ryan

Ryan Blesma 0003
“Veterans understand each other and we talk about the same things”

Ryan Thomas, a former Surgeon Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy, was on a path to higher rank when a devastating stroke left him paralyzed on one side and struggling with cognitive difficulties.

Blesma provided Ryan with essential mobility aids that have made it easier for him to navigate daily tasks. Through tailored support and access to adaptive activities, such as ski trips, Ryan has found not only physical benefits but also emotional connection and camaraderie.

As Ryan shares, “Veterans understand each other and we talk about the same things. In the Navy, I loved being a doctor and taking part in the field gun competitions. Most of all, I loved the camaraderie. It means so much.”

Remember, the Big Give Christmas Challenge only lasts from midday Tuesday 3rd December until midday 10th December.

All donations made to Blesma's Big Give fundraising page during this time period will be doubled, meaning your donation will go twice as far! Help veterans stay independent and active.
